EDU 303 Artifact #1 Standard 5

EDU 303 Artifact #1 Standard 5

This artifact shows two possible scenarios for students to interact with text in a class. The first scenario, scenario A, is an example where students are being passive consumers of the text. Scenario B is the opposite of the first scenario where instead of passively consuming content, students are more actively interacting with the text. This aligns with the standard since it shows different perspectives of a single text to engage students in the learning as well as giving students room to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills. This artifact also gets students ready for real world science literature by engaging them in reading a paper that follows the format of a published scientific article, this is a very important skill for students who wish to pursue a career in science.

This artifact expands my pedagogical knowledge since it demonstrates the “dos and don’ts” for when it comes to incorporating text into a classroom. Through this assignment I was able to gain a deeper understanding of how to ensure that my students are actively reading and understanding the texts I assign by designing appropriate curriculum and assignments around the text. Designing activities around text that engages learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues, they will take more from the text. This further improves my future practice as an effective educator since I will be able to use texts in a meaningful way in my classroom.
